Why do we call it a "tin" when it's made from galvanized steel? Presumably it's a mixture of habit and general ignorance of the intricacies of the packaging industry, but never let it be said that we sell you something without fully explaining what you're getting at Heart to Home, so allow us to explain.

Galvanisation is where the manufacturer dips the steel in a bath of molten zinc to give it a protective layer to stop it from rusting. So in the case of this Sophie Allport biscuit tin, you won't start to see those tell-tale reddish-brown marks round the bottom which you might find when you re-use old biscuit tins for storing your perishables.

You might think that tin isn't used any more to make tin cans but that's not true. There's no tin in these Sophie Allport biscuit tins, but it's not unusual to find canned goods in steel cans coated in "tinplate" – a thin coating of tin over the steel that serves the same purpose as the zinc layer on galvanized steel. So now you know: calling them "tins" isn't quite the anachronism some people might think.
