A quick question: Do you own a wheelbarrow?

If the answer's yes, suffice to say you probably spend a fair bit of time enjoying your garden.

A wheelbarrow is a watershed purchase. An article from the garden shed that – while not exclusively for gardening – shows that your garden is a place where you expect to do manual work as much as you expect to enjoy the fruits of your labours. A wheelbarrow owner has recognised that good things do not come easily. By making that investment you have acknowledged that you've got a lot of work to do and demonstrated the wisdom to make it a little easier.

The wheelbarrow features prominently in our Gardening design, illustrated by Sophie Allport. It's hard to tell if this particular wheelbarrow is the ornamental kind - perhaps a broken-down, galvanised barrow which has been repurposed as a shabby-chic planter – or if it's the working kind, piled high with green waste and headed for the compost heap. But that's the beauty of Sophie Allport's simple and distinctively British illustrative style – you can enjoy her pictures as though they were lifted from a child's picture book, with a story imagined from your very own garden, or the public park or allotments at the end of the street.

With just enough splashes of rich green and pinkish-brown to bring out the subtle greenish-blues in the background, the Gardening design looks good in any season and is neutral enough to coordinate with any kitchen décor.
