The anemone has long been a symbol of spring and so of course they're associated by most of us with other signs of the countryside blooming into life, like daffodils, freshly-hatched chicks, gambolling lambs and bunny rabbits. But in his poem Purple Anemones, the knowingly obtuse DH Lawrence called anemones "little hells of colour, caves of darkness" and playfully described them bursting forth in the meadows of Sicily as a sign of "Hell opening".
And as this Ragged Rose design boldly illustrates, anemones certainly can be "sumptuous-blooded". If you love poetry and have a yen for Ancient Greek mythology, look for Lawrence's poem, which casts the anemones of Sicily in a starring role in the story of the queen of the underworld, Persephone, attempting to escape her captor, Pluto.
