A flower has something in common with a firework, a sand castle or a bubble. It has a beauty that comes as much from its brevity and its fragility as it does from its scent and colour. We value it because we know it will soon be gone, a bitter-sweet memory shared by only a few.

Undoubtedly that's why artists have been inspired through the ages to capture flowers on canvas. Van Gogh perhaps most famously captured all the stages of a flower's life in his Sunflowers series; Frida Kahlo used flowers as a symbol of fertility and Georgia O'Keefe painted flowers that are dripping with sensuality.

If these Ragged Rose designs call to mind any of the greats it might be Emil Nolde, an early Expressionist whose vivid use of brilliant colour transformed the classic, tidy, clinical still life into an evocation of the brief bursting-forth of flowers, full of urgency and life, vibrancy and chaos.
